US Senator Bob Menendez resigns amidst espionage and corruption charges

Washington: Veteran politician and former Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Bob Menendez, has resigned following indictment on charges of espionage for Egypt and corruption.

Reports indicate that $100,000 worth of gold and $480,000 in cash were found at Menendez’s home, with allegations that the funds were received in exchange for espionage services.

Menendez has also stepped down from his position as Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, from the ruling Democratic Party, will appoint a new senator to replace Menendez.

It is noted that Menendez was previously involved in a criminal case that was dismissed seven years ago.
