US: Ban on unhealthy ingredients in school foods

In the US state of California, a ban has been imposed on several unhealthy ingredients used in foods provided to children in schools.

The California State Legislature has passed a bipartisan bill known as the ‘California School Food Safety Act.’

This bill bans the use of Red 40 and five other chemicals in foods served in public schools.

According to the Environmental Working Group, California is the first state in the country to pass such legislation, banning ingredients found in popular cereals, ice creams, beverages, candies, ice pops, jellies, cheese-flavored chips, and other foods.

The Environmental Working Group, a non-profit environmental health organization, sponsored the bill with the help of consumer reports.

The banned chemically prepared colors include Red 40, Yellow 5 and 6, Blue 1 and 2, and Green 3.
