Sudan: Dam collapse kills 30 people, wipes out 20 villages

Abu Hamdan: A dam collapse in Sudan has resulted in the deaths of 30 people, with floodwaters obliterating 20 villages.

According to reports from foreign media, the Arbat Dam in Sudan’s eastern Red Sea region gave way, causing water to surge into nearby villages, sweeping away numerous individuals.

The United Nations has reported that the water released from the dam has completely destroyed twenty villages. The collapse of the Arbat Dam has also left thousands of people homeless.

Sudan’s central Ministry of Health stated that resources are being mobilized in the area to assist those trapped by the flooding.

The statement further mentioned that at least four people have died in the floodwaters, though the number of missing persons has not been estimated.

However, a local official told a Sudanese news site that they believe at least 60 people have been killed.

Amro Issa Tahir, the head of water resources for the Red Sea state, said that the damage is extensive.

The Sudanese news agency reported that over 100 people are missing, and many other villagers have climbed rocky hilltops to escape the rising waters.

The dam, located in the city of Abu Hamdan, 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Port Sudan, provided drinking water to the city in the Red Sea.
