Students announce renewed protests starting Monday if leaders are not released

In Bangladesh, student groups have announced they will resume protests starting Monday if their leaders are not released.

The students had previously protested against the quota system for government jobs. Last week’s violent protests resulted in 205 deaths and hundreds of injuries, with 2,357 people arrested during the crackdown on demonstrators.

The official death toll from the violent protests has been confirmed at 147. A curfew has been in place in Bangladesh since last week to quell the protests, but student groups have now called for renewed demonstrations.

According to news agencies, the Bangladeshi student groups are demanding the release of their detained leaders.

It is noteworthy that recently, the Bangladeshi Supreme Court decided to allocate 93% of government jobs based on open merit. The government has assured that it will implement the Supreme Court’s decision.
