In a city in California, residents in apartments, condominiums, and townhouses will now need to think twice before smoking cigarettes inside their homes.
This week, Carlsbad became the first city in San Diego County to impose a ban on smoking of any kind within all local multi-family residential buildings.
However, this recent ordinance has sparked some complaints about government interference in residents’ private lives, while others have praised city officials for prioritizing the health of those living in these units.
Supporters of the ban point out that smoking is one of the leading causes of death in the US, resulting in more than 480,000 deaths annually according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
