Islamabad: The federal government has decided to amend the Islamabad Local Government Act, which may lead to another postponement of local elections in the capital.
The federal government will present the Islamabad Local Government (Amendment) Bill 2023 for approval in the National Assembly session today.
The Islamabad Local Government Act 2024, obtained by media, reveals that the number of elected representatives at the Union Council level has been increased.
According to the bill, previously the Union Council had only the positions of Chairman and Vice Chairman. The new bill will add 15 more representatives to these positions.
In addition, at the Union Council level, besides the Chairman and Vice Chairman, 9 members will be elected. There will also be one representative each for farmers or laborers, minorities, and youth, and three women representatives.
A total of 17 representatives will be elected at the Union Council level.
The purpose of the bill is to transfer more powers to the local level by increasing representation in the Union Council, which will help ensure that local representatives maintain closer contact with the public.
