Plight of Minorities in India

Anyone who thought that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi would change his thinking or policies was deluding themselves. As the saying goes:

A diamond can be cut with a petal’s edge,

But gentle words have no effect on the ignorant.

Anti-Muslim sentiment is deeply ingrained in Modi’s nature. During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Modi’s slogan was “Ab ki baar, chaar sau paar” (“This time, over 400 seats”). However, instead of a resounding victory, Modi and the BJP faced a severe defeat, failing to secure a majority to form the government independently. Reluctantly, BJP’s leadership had to rely on like-minded coalition partners to form the government, but even then, Prime Minister Modi’s hardline stance did not soften because anti-Muslim sentiment is inherent to BJP’s nature.

As several states in India hold Vidhan Sabha (state assembly) elections, BJP is actively using the Hindutva card and spreading anti-Muslim rhetoric during the campaign. Muslim voters are being harassed and confused. Additionally, BJP’s local workers are threatening Muslim voters. There is a limit to tolerance, and when pushed beyond this limit, even the weakest individual may be forced to fight back.

BJP workers frequently engage in actions that harm Muslim voters. The latest incident involved an elderly Muslim man traveling by train from Kalyan to Mumbai, who was brutally beaten by BJP supporters. The poor old man pleaded and wept, asking what his crime was and reminding them of his old age, likening himself to their grandfathers. He asked them to consider how they would feel if their own grandparents were treated like this and appealed to their sense of humanity.

The other passengers on the train watched this incident unfold like statues, too afraid to intervene and help the elderly man or stop the violence. The BJP government and its workers openly attack Muslims, and no one seems to care or raise their voice against this injustice. The world watches this cruelty with indifference, and no one takes the initiative to speak out against it or put an end to it.

It is evident that the BJP, its government, and other Hindu extremist groups are implementing their agenda without any hindrance since coming to power. Muslims in India are their primary target, but now it appears that other minorities, including Dalits, Christians, and Sikhs, are next in line.

Not long ago, Christian women in Manipur were subjected to horrific mistreatment, leading to severe protests against the BJP government in the region. The situation has spiraled out of control, with protests intensifying and the Modi government struggling to handle the crisis. The administration in Manipur is at a loss for how to control the situation, as the people of Manipur have resolved to take their revenge.

The unrest isn’t confined to Manipur; neighboring regions have also united against the government. The people of Mizoram, who have long been fighting for independence from Indian rule, are now more determined than ever to break free from India’s control. The day when they break the chains of Indian subjugation and gain their freedom seems not far off.
