Islamabad: A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of the Power Generation Policy 1994.
Asad Manzoor Butt, President of the Lahore High Court Bar, filed the petition under Article 184(3), naming the federal government, Ministry of Water and Power, Ministry of Energy, and others as respondents.
The petition argues that the one-sided agreements with IPPs (Independent Power Producers) are non-transparent, illegal, and un-Islamic, and that expensive electricity violates Article 18.
The petitioner contends that judicial precedents have established that policy matters affecting fundamental rights should be examined, and that the burden of high electricity tariffs falls on the public.
The petition requests that the 1994 Power Generation Policy and other related policies be declared unconstitutional, and that the court also seek details on IPPs, including those that do not produce electricity.
Following the filing of the petition in the Supreme Court, Dr. Gohar Ejaz posted on the social media platform “X” that, “Alhamdulillah, the promise made to the public has been fulfilled today.”
