Miswak or toothbrush: What do scientists say?

With the rising prevalence of oral diseases, there is a growing global need for effective oral hygiene products.

However, modern oral care tools have often overlooked one of the most effective methods of oral hygiene: miswak.

Miswak has been commonly used for teeth cleaning in ancient Arab, Iraqi, Greek, and Roman societies.

Recent chemical analysis has revealed that miswak contains a wealth of natural components not found in toothbrushes.

The analysis found that miswak includes ascorbic acid, tri-methylamine, chloride, fluoride, silica, resins, and salvadorine.

These components help in healing swollen and inflamed gums, stimulating gum tissue, removing tartar and other debris, and can even remineralize tooth enamel, whiten teeth, provide antimicrobial effects, and increase saliva flow.

Additionally, miswak contains beneficial oils, tannic acid, sulfur, and sterols, which prevent infections, contribute to anti-bad odor and antimicrobial properties, protect against tooth decay, and enhance taste perception.
