Following the martyrdom of Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas has initiated the process of selecting a new head for its political wing.
Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas, was martyred on July 31 in a missile attack in Tehran.
Iran has accused Israel and the United States of the attack, though Israel has not yet issued a statement regarding this incident.
After Ismail Haniyeh’s martyrdom, names such as Khaled Mashal and Khalil al-Hayya have emerged as potential candidates for the new political head.
Hamas has begun consultations to find Haniyeh’s replacement, but it remains unclear when this process will be completed.
When Will Hamas Elect a New Leader?
Al-Arabiya, citing sources from the Palestinian organization controlling Gaza, reported that senior Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar has advised nominating Khalil al-Hayya as the head of Hamas’s political wing instead of Khaled Mashal.
According to sources, Yahya Sinwar believes that the political wing leader should be someone who has good relations with Iran and Syria.
Hamas sources indicate that Yahya Sinwar stated the current head of Hamas will be temporary, and the decision for a permanent leader will be made in the upcoming months during elections.
