The 54-year-old patient from Italy had a portion of his broken rib removed and replaced with a metal piece.
The broken rib had caused significant pressure in his chest.
The unidentified individual was a heavy smoker and had previously suffered an accident years ago that weakened his rib.
Recently, severe coughing caused the rib to break.
Scans revealed that his eighth rib on the left side was fractured, creating a one-and-a-half-inch gap between the rib fragments.
