Lahore High Court issues written order on prisoner abuse and deaths in jails

Lahore: Chief Justice Aalia Neelum of the Lahore High Court has issued a written order regarding prisoner abuse and deaths in jails.

According to the details, Chief Justice Aalia Neelum issued the order during the hearing of a petition filed by Amna Riaz, represented by Advocate Azhar Siddique.

The petitioner’s lawyer argued that the issue is quite straightforward: incidents of deaths and abuse of prisoners in jails have become commonplace, and inmates are not being provided adequate protection.

The lawyer requested the court to issue an order ensuring complete protection for prisoners in jails.

Responding to the request, Chief Justice Aalia Neelum ordered that a report be presented on incidents of prisoner abuse in jails from January 1, 2024, to September 2024.

Chief Justice Aalia Neelum further directed the Inspector General of Prisons, Punjab, to submit a comprehensive report at the next hearing.

The written order instructed that details of deaths of prisoners in jails this year, along with their causes, should be submitted.

Additionally, the order called for a full report on complaints filed against prisoner abuse and a detailed report on conducting medical examinations of prisoners.
