Iran has detained multiple intelligence and military officers in connection with the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.
According to the New York Times, Iranian military sources have stated that, in addition to intelligence and military officers, employees of the guest house where Haniyeh was staying have also been detained for questioning.
Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran on July 31 while he was in the capital to attend the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
The assassination has raised significant security concerns in Iran, prompting the Revolutionary Guard’s special intelligence team to lead the investigation.
Reports suggest that the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh is a major blow to the Palestinian liberation movement.
Iran has vowed to avenge his death, although Israel has not officially claimed responsibility for the attack.
Initially, foreign media reported that Haniyeh was killed in a missile strike, with his location being tracked through spyware on WhatsApp.
Subsequent reports indicated that a bomb had been planted in his room, allegedly by Israeli agents using Iranian operatives. Iran reportedly has photographic evidence of these agents.
