India: Three-storey commercial building collapses in Lucknow, 8 dead

Lucknow: A three-storey commercial building collapsed in Lucknow, India, resulting in the recovery of 8 bodies from the rubble, and 28 others injured.

According to a report by the foreign news agency AFP, Indian media reported that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described the deaths caused by the building’s collapse as a tragic incident.

Videos broadcast on the media showed the destroyed building and rescue workers on-site.

The report stated that the collapsed commercial building housed multiple small companies, including warehouses and vehicle workshops.

Officials said that 8 bodies have been recovered from the rubble, and 28 people have been injured.

It remains unclear if more individuals are trapped under the debris.

The cause of the building collapse in Lucknow has not been determined; however, building and construction accidents are common in India during the monsoon season from June to September, as older buildings are particularly vulnerable to rain damage.

Akash Singh, who worked in the building, said that one of the columns of the three-storey structure had weakened, and fearing a potential accident during the monsoon rains, they had moved to the lower floor.

He added, “Suddenly, the entire building collapsed on top of us.”

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the loss of lives as heartbreaking.
