New Delhi: In India, opposition parties, including the Congress, have started appointing LGBTQ+ individuals to significant positions and have created new groups within their parties for them.
According to international news sources, India’s opposition party, Congress, has appointed LGBTQ+ activist Mario Da Pina as the head of a new unit dedicated to the LGBTQ+ community.
This unit will operate under the All India Professionals Congress Division.
Similarly, another political party, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), has appointed an LGBTQ+ individual as its spokesperson.
Apsara Reddy, a transgender woman, serves as the spokesperson for the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
It is noteworthy that the Indian Supreme Court decriminalized homosexuality, removing it from the list of crimes.
However, last year, the court declined to legalize same-sex marriage and left the matter to the Parliament.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the legislative body is the appropriate forum for such decisions.
The Congress party had also promised in its manifesto to introduce legislation that would grant legal recognition to civil unions between same-sex couples.
