First suspected case of monkeypox reported in Brazil

São Paulo: The first suspected case of monkeypox has been reported in the area near São Paulo Airport, Brazil.

Authorities have stated that a passenger, who had been staying in an area of the airport designated for those awaiting refugee status since the beginning of the month, exhibited symptoms consistent with monkeypox.

Officials did not disclose where the passenger, who was later sent to the hospital, had come from or whether they had arrived from their home country.

Earlier this month, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared monkeypox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years after a new strain of the virus spread rapidly in Africa.

Brazil’s Ministry of Health has reported that more than 700 confirmed or suspected cases of monkeypox have been identified in the country this year. However, none of these cases are of the new strain.
