Elon Musk’s company, Neuralink, has successfully implanted a computer chip into the brain of a second patient. This was confirmed by Elon Musk himself.
The purpose of this computer chip is to enable disabled patients to operate digital devices using their thoughts. Neuralink is currently conducting trials of his device.
Elon Musk’s Company Previously Successfully Installed a Chip in a Human Brain
Earlier, in January 2024, Neuralink had successfully implanted the chip in a human brain, allowing the individual to play video games, browse the internet, post on social media, and move a computer cursor on a laptop.
Elon Musk discussed the implantation of this chip in a podcast, noting that the second patient, who had been disabled due to a spinal cord injury, now has 400 functioning electrodes in the brain. Musk stated that the second chip is performing exceptionally well.
He did not disclose when the surgery for the second patient was performed but mentioned that Neuralink plans to implant the chip in the brains of eight more patients during clinical trials.
Patient Able to Play Games Using Thoughts After Chip Implant
Neuralink is not the only company working on connecting the human brain to computers. However, the chip developed by Neuralink does not require any external device connections via wires.
On March 20, 2024, Musk posted on X (formerly Twitter) that this device might also have the potential to restore vision.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had granted the company permission for clinical trials to implant the computer chip in human brains last year.
Musk had referred to this device as a form of telepathy.
The company has been working on this chip for some time and claims it will enable disabled individuals to regain movement and speech.
