Columbia: The president of Columbia University, Minouche Shafik, has resigned from her position following protests on campus against the Gaza war.
Shafik’s resignation came after a debate on freedom of expression held in the wake of protests against the Israeli actions in Gaza.
This resignation follows just one year after Shafik took up the role at the private Ivy League university in New York City. She is the third Ivy League president to resign over opposition to pro-Gaza protests.
In April, Shafik made the controversial decision to allow New York Police Department officers onto campus, resulting in the arrest of nearly 100 students who were protesting against Israel.
This was the first large-scale arrest on Columbia’s campus since the Vietnam War protests over five decades ago.
This action sparked protests across numerous colleges in the United States and Canada.
Katrina Armstrong, CEO of Columbia University Irving Medical Center, will serve as interim president.
