Canada’s first female Army Chief takes command

According to foreign media reports, General Jennie Carignan, 56, assumed the role of Chief of Defence Staff of Canada during a ceremony on Thursday, becoming the first woman to lead the Canadian Armed Forces.

Jennie Carignan began her career as a military engineer and, over her 35-year career, has led troops in Afghanistan, Bosnia, Iraq, and Syria.

General Jennie Carignan succeeds General Wayne Eyre as Chief of Defence Staff.

It is worth noting that Jennie Carignan is the second female army chief in the world, with the first being General Alenka Ermenc of Slovenia, who became the head of her country’s armed forces in 2018.
