Bristol woman claims cold water swimming saved her life from severe depression

Bristol: A woman from England claims that swimming in cold water saved her life.

Helen, a 37-year-old from Bristol, was advised to swim in cold water as part of her treatment for depression. She revealed that this activity saved her life because she had been contemplating suicide.

Helen Downham experienced several traumatic events between 2019 and 2022, including the end of her marriage, losing her job, and breaking a leg.

As a mother, Helen was already struggling with mental health issues, but she said that the events during the pandemic made her consider taking her own life.

Helen was also prescribed medication for depression and anxiety, but she said it was of no help.

In January, a doctor referred her to a six-week course with a local women’s cold water swimming group. During this course, she felt significant changes and a more positive outlook on her thoughts.
