Bangladeshi Army Chief announces interim government

Dhaka: Following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladeshi Army Chief General Waqar-ul-Zaman has announced the formation of an interim government, with details to be released soon.

In a national address, the Bangladeshi Army Chief expressed sorrow over the deaths that occurred during nationwide protests and appealed to citizens to remain peaceful.

General Waqar-ul-Zaman stated that after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s departure abroad, an interim government was decided upon after productive discussions with all political parties.

He added that tonight he will discuss the situation with President Mohammad Shahabuddin to resolve the matter.

The Army Chief called for an end to violent protests and promised that the interim government would investigate all the deaths and ensure justice for the victims’ families.

He mentioned that Professor Asif Nazrul from Dhaka University’s Law Department has been requested to issue a statement urging students to end their protests.

In response to a question, he stated that the interim government’s structure, which will likely include proportional representation, will be announced soon. It will be a coalition government.

The Army Chief assured that everything would be settled today, asking the public to trust the military.

He promised that investigations into the deaths of protesters would be conducted and that peace would be restored in the country.

It is noted that no representative from the Awami League was present in the meeting with the Army Chief and leaders of all the country’s parties following the Prime Minister’s resignation.
