Aid agencies warn of historic food shortages in Sudan

Khartoum: Aid agencies have warned that Sudan is facing an emergency food crisis due to civil war, but the international community has failed to act effectively.

According to Iranian news agency Tasnim News, the Norwegian Refugee Council issued a statement on Tuesday saying that Sudan is experiencing a historic level of food crisis, yet no strategic measures are being implemented.

The statement further noted that people are dying from hunger every day, while attention remains focused on verbal debates and legal proceedings.

It reported that four out of every 10,000 children are dying of hunger daily, representing 30% of the population suffering from food insecurity.

Foreign media reports indicate that in conflict situations like in Sudan, it becomes difficult to determine where aid operations are impeded, preventing help from reaching everyone.

Bloodshed has led to more than 10 million people being displaced and thousands killed.

Tasnim News reported that many fields have been destroyed, farmers displaced, and livestock killed, severely affecting food production.

Aid groups estimate that more than 25 million people have no access to food.

The Refugee Council noted that many families are forced to eat leaves and insects and are only able to eat once a day. Appeals for donations have only met half of the required needs.
