Adequate sleep on weekends may reduce heart disease risks, Study finds

A new study reveals that people who get sufficient sleep on weekends could reduce their risk of heart disease by up to 20%.

Data from over 90,000 individuals in the UK shows that making up for sleep deprivation during the week with extra sleep on weekends can mitigate the negative effects of sleep loss.

Results presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress 2024 indicate that individuals who catch up on sleep over the weekend have a 20% lower risk of heart disease compared to those who either do not sleep in on weekends or get very little extra sleep.

Yan Jian Song, a researcher from the National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases at Fu Wai Hospital in Beijing, China, stated that adequate sleep is associated with a lower risk of heart disease.

This association is even more pronounced in individuals who regularly experience insufficient sleep during the week.
