Karachi: Renowned Pakistani actress and model Aamna Ilyas has stated that in Pakistan, laws are only for the poor, while there are none for the powerful.
On August 23, the romantic comedy film ‘Mastani,’ featuring actor Iffan Waheed and Aamna Ilyas, was released across cinemas in the country.
During the event, Aamna Ilyas spoke to journalists about her role as Aaliya, a lively girl who has never faced hardship and lives life on her own terms.
She mentioned that she learned a lot from playing this character.
When asked about increasing violence and sexual assault against women in Pakistan and India, Aamna Ilyas said she does not feel safe as a woman in Pakistan.
She questioned how she would get justice if something were to happen to her in the future and the perpetrator was powerful in terms of money and position, as there are no laws for the powerful in Pakistan.
She emphasized that not all men are the same and criticized a few men who make every man look bad.
She stressed that unless criminals are given exemplary punishments, incidents of violence and sexual assault will not decrease. If any woman is involved in crimes, she should also be punished, as laws should be equal for both men and women.
Ilyas cited the Noor Mukadam case, noting that the accused is living comfortably in jail with no verdict yet, while Noor’s parents are repeatedly given new court dates.
She further stated that those in power need to improve Pakistan’s system and laws.
