Toronto: Researchers at Western University have studied a specific molecule found in oranges and tangerines called nobiletin.
According to the researchers, this molecule has significantly reduced obesity and successfully reversed its negative side effects in animal experiments.
However, the exact mechanism of how it works remains a mystery.
Research published in the “Journal of Lipid Research” reveals that when rats were fed a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet and given nobiletin, they remained significantly leaner. These rats also showed reduced insulin resistance and lower blood lipid levels.
Dr. Murray Huff, a professor at Western’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, stated that they have demonstrated the potential of nobiletin as a treatment.
They have shown that in rats already exhibiting all the negative symptoms of obesity, they were able to reverse these symptoms with the help of nobiletin.
