Despite local manufacturing, mobile phone imports surge by 233%

Islamabad: Despite local manufacturing of mobile phones, a significant increase of 233% in mobile phone imports was recorded during the fiscal year 2023-24.

According to data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, $1.899 billion was spent on mobile phone imports in fiscal year 2023-24, a 233% increase compared to $570 million in fiscal year 2022-23.

The report indicates that $279 million was spent on mobile phone imports in June 2024, marking a 420% increase compared to June 2023. In June 2024, mobile phones worth $96 million were imported.

The data shows a 77% month-over-month increase in mobile phone imports from May to June, with expenditures rising from $158 million in May to $279 million in June.

It is noteworthy that the total imports of the machinery group for fiscal year 2024 amounted to $8.501 billion, a 46% increase compared to $5.812 billion in fiscal year 2023.
