An American newspaper has revealed that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi attempted to give Donald Trump $10 million for his presidential campaign.
According to the report, Trump faced a funding shortfall during his 2016 presidential campaign.
The Washington Post reported that the U.S. Department of Justice is reviewing whether the money was transferred from Egypt to Trump.
The transfer of funds would violate the law prohibiting U.S. candidates from accepting foreign funding.
The newspaper noted that in 2019, investigations into foreign funding were halted due to objections from Trump’s Attorney General.
In June 2020, prosecutors also closed the case due to insufficient evidence.
The report states that on September 19, 2016, Donald Trump met with the Egyptian president in New York.
Around the same time, $10 million was withdrawn from Egypt’s state-owned National Bank, raising suspicions that the money was transferred to Trump.
