German man becomes world’s seventh person cured of AIDS

Munich: A man from Germany has become the seventh person in the world to be cured of AIDS.

Researchers revealed that the 60-year-old, who also had acute myeloid leukemia due to AIDS, was treated with a stem cell transplant in October 2015.

They further explained that he stopped taking antiretroviral medications necessary to suppress HIV in September 2018. However, in the nearly six years since then, he has not developed any detectable new levels of the virus that causes AIDS.

The recovered individual, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “A healthy person has many wishes, but a sick person has only one wish: to recover.”

On the other hand, the patient’s doctors stated that his case provides new insights into the potential for HIV gene therapy treatment for everyone.
