Bangladesh Supreme Court suspends High Court’s order on quota system in government jobs

Dhaka: The Supreme Court of Bangladesh has halted the implementation of a High Court order reinstating the quota system for government jobs.

The High Court had previously mandated the restoration of the quota system last month.

In response to protests and violent demonstrations against the quota system, a curfew in Bangladesh has been extended until this afternoon.

Security forces continue to patrol Dhaka’s streets, following protests that have resulted in 133 deaths, including 2 police officers, and 150 injuries to police personnel.

The government has also suspended internet, text messaging, and overseas call services since Thursday, with educational institutions and offices closed.

Why the Protests?

Students have been protesting against the 30% quota allocated to the children of 1971 war veterans for government jobs.

The protests have led to clashes between anti-quota students and the ruling Awami League’s student wing.

In Bangladesh, 56% of government job positions are reserved under the quota system, with 30% designated for the children of war veterans, 10% for women, and 10% for residents of specific districts.
