Drinking water in many cities, including Karachi, found to be hazardously contaminated

Islamabad: It has been revealed that 61% of drinking water in 29 cities across the country is dangerously contaminated.

According to a report presented by the Ministry of Water Resources to the National Assembly, drinking water in several Pakistani cities is unsafe.

In Gilgit, Mirpur Khas, and Shaheed Benazirabad, the drinking water is 100% unsafe, while in Karachi, 93%, in Multan, 94%, and in Badin, 92% of the drinking water is contaminated.

The report also notes that in Bahawalpur, 76%, in Sargodha, 83%, in Faisalabad, 59%, and in Sheikhupura, 60% of the water is contaminated.

In Abbottabad and Khuzdar, 55%, in Loralai and Quetta, 59%, in Hyderabad, 80%, in Sukkur, 67%, and in Muzaffargarh, 70% of the water is polluted.

The PCRWR regularly sends nationwide water monitoring results to the provinces.

After the 18th Amendment, the responsibility for providing clean drinking water and improving its quality falls to the provinces.
