17th Century Japanese sword discovered in Berlin

Berlin: Archaeologists have discovered a 17th-century Japanese sword among the remnants of the Berlin cellar destroyed during World War II.

The sword dates back to Japan’s Edo period, a time when the country isolated itself to prevent external colonial and religious influences, keeping its borders closed for nearly three centuries. This find is considered a remarkable discovery.

Matthias Wiemhoff, the State Archaeologist and Museum Director in Berlin, remarked on the surprising nature of the find, questioning how such an ancient sword ended up in Berlin when Japan was so isolated and European explorers rarely visited.

The sword was unearthed during excavations in Mölken Markt in 2022.
